Traditionally, citizenship ceremonies were held in person, but due to the pandemic, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started hosting virtual ceremonies to respect social distancing rules and reduce queues.
During the ceremony, eligible applicants sing the Canadian national anthem and take the Oath of Citizenship in front of a judge and their loved ones. The oath of citizenship is an official promise to respect Canadian law and respect the duty of Canadian citizens. Once you swear, you will become a Canadian citizen.
The Canadian virtual citizenship ceremony passes through the zoom. Most of them include several people, up to 1.5 hours. Your family and friends can be in the room with you. A presiding officer (for example, a citizenship judge) and an IRCC officer will observe the ceremony via video and administer the oath. You are expected to dress respectfully; business style is recommended. Traditional or religious clothing and head coverings are permitted.
Expect to receive an email or phone call from IRCC one to two weeks in advance. This invitation will include information about the date and time of your ceremony, what to bring to the ceremony, how to reschedule your ceremony (if necessary), and the Zoom link.
You will need to have the appropriate equipment to participate in a video swearing-in ceremony, including internet access, a computer, tablet, or phone with audio or video capabilities. If you do not already have this, you will need to access a device and download Zoom.
You will also receive a checklist of items you need to bring with you during the video swearing-in ceremony, which includes:
- Your PR card (even if it has expired) or Certificate of Permanent Residence (COPR)
- Two pieces of personal identification (one can be your Permanent Resident card)
- Optional: A Holy Book if you would like to use one to take your citizenship oath.
