Summer jobs for international students in Canada

Students are only allowed to work in Canada, without separate work permit, if they have permission to work on training authorization. This work permit will indicate whether the owner of permission to study is authorized to work on a campus, outside the campus or both. International students should begin their job search by understanding the changes to work hour policies implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These changes vary from time to time.

More specifically, it is important to know that the summer is generally considered a “scheduled break” in the academic calendar, unless an international student chooses to (or is required to) take classes during this time. The reason this distinction is important is because IRCC allows international students to work more than 40 hours per week during scheduled academic breaks.

Although according to the recent IRCC’s decision, politics returns to 24 hours in the fall, however, international students on the summer break can continue working an unlimited amount of time this summer until the new policy goes into effect. Therefore, international students who are often eager to understand how summer employment works in Canada so that they can use this time to earn money and support themselves.
