After Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6, Pierre Poilievre became the leading contender to become Canada’s prime minister after the 2025 election. His points of view on immigration are briefly as follows:
On economic immigration
Poilievre has generally supported economic immigration to fill Canada’s labour shortage. For example, in 2015, he announced funding for projects that would allow foreign-trained doctors and engineers to more quickly integrate into the Canadian labour market.
On the Temporary Foreign Worker Program
His comments suggest he believes that the LMIA system is not being used properly, and that Employment and Social Development Canada has been issuing positive LMIAs even when Canadian citizens and permanent residents are available to do the job.
On border security
At a December press conference, the conservative party’s leader called for increased security measures, including more patrols and the use of technology to reduce drug trafficking, as well as tougher visa rules.
On immigration targets
Poilievre clarified “We need to establish a connection between the number of houses built and the number of people whom we invite as new Canadians,”
He reiterated that a future Conservative government would consider setting the country’s population growth rate lower than the number of new homes being built and said it would also take factors such as access to healthcare and jobs into account when setting immigration targets.
On values and integration
In a recent interview, Poilievre suggested newcomers “leave their problems at the door” when they immigrate, suggesting the need for greater cultural integration.
