How can a newcomer safely and affordably transport assets to Canada?
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is the agency that controls Canada’s borders and decides who and what can cross. When immigrating to Canada, newcomers can bring in personal and household items without paying customs duties (government fees levied on certain products imported into Canada), as long as they declare the items they’re bringing in to a CBSA officer.
In particular, first-time immigrants to Canada typically do not have to pay for the following:
- Books;
- Bedsheets;
- Clothes;
- Jewelry;
- Antiques;
- Furniture;
- Silverware;
- Musical instruments;
- Gifts under 60 Canadian dollars each;
- Tools and other hobby items;
- Personal collections of coins, stamps and artwork; and/or
- Household appliances such as stoves and refrigerators.
Newcomers, however, have to pay for duties:
- Agricultural equipment;
- The equipment is planned for use in:
- Contracts;
- Construction; and/or
- Vehicles are scheduled for business;
- Items purchased on the road to Canada; and/or
- Items that are rented or leased;
On the other hand, CBSA requires travelers must declare “currency (money) or cash tool *that is estimated to be $ 10,000 or more”. This amount is included as a Canada, foreign currency, or two combinations. What this means is that newcomers can bring a substantial amount of wealth with them into Canada, duty-free, through a simple declaration of money or monetary instruments. For this purpose, upon arrival in Canada, newcomers must submit a declaration to the CBSA. If newcomers wish to pre-declare, they can do so via the ArriveCAN application, too.
Last but not the least, if newcomers have goods to bring into Canada on their next trip, they can submit a list of “goods to be imported next” as part of their CBSA declaration, which will allow them to import these goods in the future without paying duties and taxes, provided that the goods qualify for duty-free entry and are included in their initial list of “goods to be imported subsequently.”
