IRCC plans to introduce limitations on family Open Work Permits starting in January 2025

The Canadian government is now enforcing stricter regulations on work permits for the family members of international students and foreign workers as follows:

International Students
Starting January 21, 2025, family open work permits (OWPs) for international students will only be available to the spouses or common-law partners of students who are currently enrolled in:
– Master’s programs that last 16 months or more;
– Doctoral programs; or
– Certain professional and eligible programs.

Foreign Workers
For foreign workers, family OWPs will be restricted to the spouses or common-law partners of individuals employed in:
– TEER 0 or 1 occupations; and
– Certain occupations in TEER 2 or 3
Besides, to qualify under these new rules, the foreign worker must have at least 16 months of validity remaining on their work permit at the time their spouse applies. Additionally, dependent children of foreign workers will no longer be eligible for family OWPs.
